In cooperation with Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Santa Fe's mechanical department designed the 3776 class at the railroad's Topeka facility, based on what had been learned from the preceding 3751 and 3765 classes of 4-8-4 locomotives. Thought by many to represent the epitome of AT&SF steam locomotive design, these splendid locomotives began arriving in 1941. Though not considered ground-breaking, these Baldwin-built locomotives were exemplary in every respect. Hauling a new, 24,500 gallon tender, they were massive and clean looking, and an extension of the already worthy 3765 class. Known for pulling more than 2-dozen Pullmans, and even hauling as many as 18 at 100 mph, they were assigned to the road's premier trains, including the Chief.
were later rebuilt with Boxpok drivers on the No. 1, 2, and 3 axles, roller bearing rods and telescoping stacks. Beginning in 1949, several also received new boilers, and these are recognized by the lack of a visible steam dome. The last revenue run, by a Santa Fe steam locomotive, was made by the 3780. |
