Numbering 30 locomotives, the 2900-class Northerns were the road's last newly purchased, steam-powered passenger engines. Manufactured by Baldwin during the War-years, these "Big Mountains", as the wheel configuration was once called by the Santa Fe, were the product of wartime materials shortages, especially high- strength alloys. Being forced to defer to heavier, lower tensile-strength components to maintain the necessary overall strength, they were about 8-tons heavier than the similar 3776-class. They weighed just over 510,000 pounds, not including the tender, and had the distinction of being the heaviest 4-8-4s ever built.
Standard Steel Works (SSW) foundry. Later, the #4 axle, on most locomotives of the class, was replaced with Baldwin discs along with other post-War modifications, including lightweight roller bearing rods, and telescoping stack extensions. The substitution of the Baldwin disc driver was apparently an effort to improve engine balance and the riding qualities of these locomotives. Six examples of these fine locomotives are preserved; however, had more diesels been available, the 2900s may have never left the drawing boards at Topeka. |
